Chevy Metal, featuring Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins, will headline Saturday, May 14 at 5:30 p.m. The concert is free with CVD admission. A limited number of VIP tickets for front-of-the-stage viewing are already sold out. Always a crowd pleaser, CVD 4th Annual Outhouse Races will take place on Sunday, May 15. Participants are encouraged to be creative. A Garden & Home Décor Show will be held the Saturday and Sunday of CVD, May 14 and 15. Anchoring the show and hosting the “décor” portion is Reeds Furniture. Reeds Furniture has been active in the Conejo Valley since 1960 and is a long-time supporter of Conejo Valley Days. It will be at the festival all five days.

STEM Exhibition Pavilion

While marking its six decades in the community, the 60th annual Conejo Valley Days will also be celebrating the future by hosting a STEM Exhibition Pavilion. UCLA Health and CBC Federal Credit Union  are pavilion sponsors.

The STEM Exhibition Pavilion will recognize the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) accomplishments of students in third grade through secondary schooling and community college. It will feature a LEGO building project and lots of hands on activities for those who want to play with a robot or take part in a fun science experiment. The Thousand Oaks Library will be demonstrating a 3-D printer. Kristen Routh, Ms. Regional California America 2016, will be lending a hand at the pavilion.

Kids and Animals

Art Trek, an independent, not-for-profit arts program, will be at CVD Saturday and Sunday so kids (and adults) can draw and make banners.

Members from the 501st Legion, a worldwide organization dedicated to all things Star Wars, will be in authentic Star Wars costumes at CVD Saturday, May 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Festivalgoers will be able to get their pictures taken with the troopers and other Star Wars characters.

In addition to being the overall CVD sponsor, The Pets Central Education and Welfare Foundation is also  sponsoring the Shelter for Hope pet adoptions on Saturday and Sunday. More than 30 local nonprofit groups participate in CVD each year, raising money that is invested back into the community.

“This year’s CVD is packed with something for everyone. It showcases many of the wonderful nonprofit organizations, schools, volunteers and businesses in the Conejo Valley that make it such a wonderful community to live and raise our children. Without our sponsors and supporters such Event Essentials, Thousand Oaks Inn, KHAY, Conejo Valley Heating and Air, LaRocca Integrated Services and so  many more, we would not be able to keep up this wonderful tradition. ” says Mary-Catherine McBride, CVD executive director. “We are truly fortunate.”

In celebration of its 60th year, Conejo Valley Days is launching a 60th Anniversary “Instahunt” with clues that describe landmarks around the Conejo Valley. The contest runs now through May 8. Those who find all 10 landmarks and post pictures with them on Instagram are eligible to win prizes. The Instahunt contest is a run-up to this year’s festival May 11 through May 15, at Conejo Creek Park South in Thousand Oak.

Winners will be selected in a drawing on May 10. The grand prize is a one-day entry pass into CVD, a one-day ride wristband (good for unlimited carnival rides) and a CVD 60th anniversary commemorative button. Second and third place winners each receive two CVD entry passes.

Here are the clues:

1. You don’t need to go all the way to the Australian Outback to horse around. You can do that right here.

2:   One of the oldest restaurants on the boulevard gives us a “wheelie” good glimpse of how we got around 100 years ago.

3:    Though Native Americans didn’t have much use for canoes in the Conejo, this Native American is riding high in one

4:       CLU owes a lot to this Norwegian family of farmers. Glad the university kept a part of the family’s history.

5:       Before planes, trains and automobiles, this was a favorite Conejo Valley stage stop—although the original was destroyed by fire.

6:       Lions used to perform tricks here. One even escaped. Still attracts visitors who want to be entertained.

7:       Chumash families lived together in these hundreds of years ago.

8:       Here’s a cowboy on horseback heading out on Hillcrest. Watch out! He’s about to be thrown—although he’s “banking” on happy trails.

9:       Majestic Chumash bronze, but don’t get wet!

10:       This honors a veterinarian who was kind to lions, tigers and bears at this very location for 40 years.

Hint: the landmarks reflect the Coney Valley’s heritage and history. Most of the landmarks are in plain view where you shop and where you eat. Some are a little out of the way.

Here are the rules:

–Follow Conejo Valley Days on Instagram: www.instagram.com/conejovalleydays/

–All CVD Instahunt posts must be a selfie with or in front of the landmark. The landmark must be visible enough to confirm its identity. The selfie must include the Instagram account holder. Selfies can also include friends, family, photobombs, pets, etc.

–Posts must tag @conejovalleydays.

–Posts must include both hashtags: #CVD60 and #CVDInstahunt.

–Posts must include the clue number. Posts do not need to include the name of the landmark. Posts can include additional descriptions.

–Posts must be posted during the contest period. Posts with missing information or posted outside of the contest period will be disqualified.

Winners will be announced on May 11 on Facebook and Instagram. Winners may pick up their prize at CVD’s Will Call booth. Selfies will appear in CVD’s Instagram gallery at www.conejovalleydays.us/cvd-instagram-gallery/.

For more information about the contest, go to www.conejovalleydays.us/Instahunt.

501st Legion’s Southern California Garrison members are the real deal—they were invited by Lucasfilm to stand guard at the premiere of The Force Awakens. While marking its six decades in the community, the 60th annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) will also be celebrating the future by hosting a STEM Exhibition Pavilion at this year’s event, May 11 through May 15, at Conejo Creek Park South in Thousand Oaks. UCLA Health is a pavilion sponsor.

The STEM Exhibition Pavilion will recognize the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) accomplishments of students in third grade through secondary schooling and community college. It will also feature science and award-winning robotics demonstrations by high school and college students.

The pavilion’s 100’ x 30’ tent will be divided into four major areas: elementary school engineering and construction (including a LEGO building project), intermediate and high school robotics and engineering, intermediate and high school science, bioscience and medical and Internet applications (all education levels).

“We want to encourage young people to develop scientific and technological knowledge and then share what they’ve learned with the public,” says Ron Block, chair of the STEM Exhibition Pavilion project. “The pavilion will also be a place where young festival goers can take part in science and engineering-based hands-on experiments and activities.”

Only about 18 exhibits can be accepted this year. Students who have submitted projects to the Ventura County or State science fairs can also submit the same projects to the CVD pavilion. The STEM Exhibition Pavilion advisory board, made up of scientists, educators and business leaders, will select the exhibitors.

While entries will not be judged, students with exhibits will receive a certificate acknowledging their project’s acceptance and participation. “This is the STEM Exhibition Pavilion’s first year,” says Block. “We have a strong advisory board with plans to make this a permanent fixture at CVD.”

Last year, CVD was one of the sponsors of the giant LEGO project during the City of Thousand Oaks’ 50th anniversary celebration. Jared Brems (LEGO/robotics instructor), a pavilion advisory board member, will be coordinating the LEGO demonstration at the pavilion.

Entry forms and more information are at http://www.conejovalleydays.us/stem-pavilion. The deadline to complete and submit the form is April 15. For more information, contact Ron Block, 805-402-0889, rjblock9@gmail.com.

CVD hours are Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 and 12, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 5:00 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 14, noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, noon to 8:00 p.m.

The Pets Central Education and Welfare Foundation is the nonprofit partner for this year’s Conejo Valley Days. In addition, more than 30 local nonprofit groups participate in CVD each year, raising money that is invested back into the community.

The cost is $64.75 (includes service fee), 20 percent off the regular price. The packages are available only online through the CVD website (http://www.conejovalleydays.us/tickets/) until April 29.

General admission tickets for kids and adults are also on sale online. Carnival ride tickets and unlimited ride wristbands (Thursday and Sunday only) are available at CVD at the carnival ride ticket booths.

An opportunity for kids through fifth grade to earn free ride tickets is through CVD’s Read & Ride program. Children must read three books approved by their teacher and their parent, write a brief summary of each book on a Read & Ride form, have his or her parent and teacher sign the completed form and bring it to the RCS information booth inside the CVD site to receive a pass good for three free rides. Kindergarten-age kids can draw pictures about their books on the back of the form. Forms are available on the CVD website.

CVD hours are Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 and 12, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 5:00 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 14, noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, noon to 8:00 p.m. More than 30 local nonprofit groups participate in CVD each year, raising money that is invested back into the community.

outhouse races 2015 smallApplications are now available for the 4th Annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) Outhouse Races. The races will take place Sunday, May 15 at 1:00 p.m. during CVD (Conejo Creek Park South, Thousand Oaks). The races are sponsored by Cal-State Site Services.

Participants are encouraged to be creative. Previous years saw such entries as “Party Pooper,” “Ye Olde John” and “Poop Coupe.’” The racecourse distance is about 200 feet on grass. Racing outhouses are built on wheels. Specific rules for outhouse building and racing are found on the CVD website along with an entry form. The entry fee is $50.

“Competition can get pretty intense, but in the end it’s all about having fun,” says Chris dePalma, outhouse race chairperson. “Cal-State Site Services is the perfect sponsor for the races. They provide temporary fences, barricades and, of course, outhouses for special events.”

“We love Conejo Valley Days and have been attending and providing services for many years,” says Eric Giffin, Cal-State Site Services general manager. “Kelly Kimes, our events director, has become a big part of the ‘behind the scenes’ action by coordinating installation, set up, services and break down. Cal-State Site Services can’t think of a better hometown race to sponsor. We will be unveiling our own top secret racer soon.”

The deadline to enter is Tuesday, May 10. Outhouses must be delivered to the CVD site between 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on that day. Each outhouse entry must have its name displayed on the exterior. To participate, someone is required to sit in the outhouse while two others push the outhouse down the course.

Trophies are awarded to first, second and third place winners. In addition, there will be a “People’s Choice Award.” For information and entry forms, go to http://www.conejovalleydays.us/outhouse-races or contact dePalma, cvdouthouserace@gmail.com.

The 60th annual Conejo Valley Days is May 11 through May 15. CVD hours are Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 and 12, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 5:00 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday, May 14, noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, noon to 8:00 p.m.

Childrens Parade

Kids can create imaginative costumes, decorate their tricycles and wagons and then take part in the Conejo Valley Days (CVD) children’s parade, Saturday, May 7 at Conejo Creek Park North in Thousand Oaks (behind the Thousand Oaks Library). The parade is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks.

The children’s parade had been a mainstay of CVD for decades. “We wanted to bring back a long-ago CVD tradition,” says George Lange, co-chair of the parade. “It just needed an organization to step forward. Kiwanis was happy to take the lead.”

Parade participation is open to children from pre-school through third grade. Western costumes are encouraged. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. with the parade at 9:00 a.m. Participants will be divided by age (with the youngest children lined up first). Children’s activities will be available after the parade, and vendors will be on hand for those who wish to purchase food and drinks.

“The parade is geared for our community’s little ones. No bands, no floats. Just an opportunity for kids and families to have fun,” says Chuck Huffer, Kiwanis member and parade co-chair.

Each young parade participant will receive a $1 off coupon that can be used by the child or family member to enter the Conejo Valley Days (May 11 through 15 at Conejo Creek Park South, across the street from the library). This year marks CVD’s 60th anniversary.
