For the second year, Conejo Valley Days (CVD) is offering free carnival ride passes for students who take part in its “Read & Ride” literacy program. CVD, in conjunction with carnival operator RCS, is encouraging kids in kindergarten through fifth grade to read by offering the ride passes for this year’s festival (May 11 through 15 at Conejo Creek Park South in Thousand Oaks).

The rules are simple. Children must read three books approved by their teacher and their parent, write a brief summary of each book on a Read & Ride form, have his or her parent and teacher sign the completed form and bring it to the RCS information booth inside the CVD site to receive a pass good for three free rides. Kindergarten-age kids can draw pictures about their books on the back of the form.
“Read & Ride” is approved by the Conejo Valley Unified School District. Homeschoolers and libraries can also take part in the program.

Participating schools must display a 3’ x 5’ Conejo Valley Days “Ready & Ride” banner at the school entrance from April 15 through May 15 and return the banner in good shape after CVD is over. In return, the school PTA will receive a $100 donation from CVD.

A separate banner-only promotion is available for middle schools, high schools and other nonprofit organizations.

All “Read & Ride” and banner information/forms are on the CVD website (www.conejovalleydays.us). Contact Diane Rumbaugh, 805-493-2877, diane@rumbaughpr.com or Robin Hagey, 805-338-1700, robin@robinhagey.com.

Sponsor and exhibitor packets are now available for the 60th annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) being held May 11 through 15 at Conejo Creek Park South (Janss Rd./23 Freeway) in Thousand Oaks. Food concessions are already sold out for the event.

Sponsorship opportunities range from onsite banners to title sponsor. Local businesses and craftspeople can participate in CVD as exhibitors. This year, exhibitors will be housed in an approximately 75’ by 100’ exhibitors’ tent. A separate home décor and landscaping tent it also in the works.

Booth exhibitors are required to decorate their booths in a western theme and wear western attire. “Many people who live in the Conejo Valley aren’t aware of the valley’s country heritage so it’s important to keep Conejo Valley Days’ western traditions alive. It gets everyone in the spirit,” says Mary-Catherine McBride, CVD’s executive director.

For the third year, RCS will be providing the carnival rides and game booths. RCS is one of the top carnival operators in the southwest United States (Coachella Music Festival, Orange County Fair, Los Angeles County Fair). “RCS is bringing its state-of-the-art rides and its easy-to-win midway games,” says McBride. “RCS’ philosophy is that visitors should all leave the festival with arms full of prizes.”

CVD201465

The expanded five-day event features entertainment for kids, teens and the whole family including live music, motocross freestyle exhibitions, outhouse races and displays by the Chumash Indian Museum and other historical sites. Live entertainment and hands-on exhibits are included with general admission. “We’ll be celebrating our 60th anniversary with a CVD Scavenger Hunt around the Conejo Valley. Details will be announced soon,” says McBride.

Over 25 local nonprofit groups participate in CVD each year, raising money that is invested back into the community. “The mission of CVD has always been to support local non-profits and businesses,” says McBride. “CVD has strong community roots that continue to grow by encouraging literacy, health and education by bringing folks of all ages together for a safe, fun and entertaining experience.” This year, CVD will premiere a Science and Engineering Pavilion where local students can have the opportunity to display their science, technology and engineering talents.

CVD hours are Wednesday and Thursday, May 11 and 12, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 13, 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday, May 14, noon to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, noon to 8:00 p.m.

Sponsorship and exhibitor packages are available on the CVD website, www.conejovalleydays.us. For more information, contact Mary-Catherine McBride at 805-701-7248, vendors@conejovalleydays.us.

CVD JudeDates for the 60th Annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) are now set. CVD will be held Wednesday through Sunday, May 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. The location will remain the same: Conejo Creek Park South in Thousand Oaks.

With the celebration of its 60th year, CVD is returning to a five-day format, with special events planned for Wednesday, May 11. Scheduled so far for the 2016 CVD are motocross, a teenage battle of the bands, a science pavilion, the 4th annual Outhouse Races and a home décor pavilion. Coming back in 2016 are displays by the Chumash Indian Museum, the Stagecoach Inn and Joel McCrea Ranch.

Madison and Lukas CVDCVD will again offer its Read & Ride program—where kids can read books to earn free ride tickets. “Read & Ride was a favorite last year for families,” says Mary-Catherine McBride, CVD executive director. “Depending on the ride, a little reading meant big savings.” CVD will also offer unlimited ride wristbands on several of the festival days and presale tickets.

For the third year, RCS Shows will provide the carnival rides. To minimize wear and tear on the soccer fields at Conejo Creek Park South, the footprint of the festival will be rearranged so some of the larger rides will be placed in the parking lot on the west side of the park. “We’re working with the Conejo Recreation & Park District on this. The soccer fields are an important part of our community. The new configuration should work well for everyone,” says McBride.

Also in the works are ways to commemorate CVD’s 60th anniversary. All ideas are welcome. Sponsorships are available. Contact CVD by calling 805-498-0624 emailing info@conejovalleydays.us, through Facebook, www.facebook.com/ConejoValleyDays or on Twitter, @CVDays60.

Nicole Baikalov, a fifth grader at Lang Ranch Elementary School, is the winner of Conejo Valley Days’ Mother’s Day Essay Contest. The contest asked kids in grades three through fifth to submit an essay on “Why my mom is the best mom in the whole world and one important lesson she has taught me.”

“We received many wonderful entries,” says Mary-Catherine McBride, Conejo Valley Days (CVD) executive director. “There are a lot of great moms out there. It was hard to choose. Nicole’s entry really tugged on the heart strings.”

In part, Nicole wrote how “my mom cares for me whenever I am hurt or my feelings are hurt. My mom taught me how to be responsible for all things, and to be respectful to nature that’s all around. But one special thing she has taught me was to believe in myself and have courage.”

“I like to go on hikes, shopping, biking and family vacations with my mom,” says Nicole. “She always watches me play tennis and volleyball. My mom is the funniest most caring mother ever.” This will be Nicole’s third year coming to Conejo Valley Days. She is looking forward to riding the Ferris wheel with her family.

Nicole’s mother, Claudia, is mom to four kids: Nicole and her twin sister Victoria, Christina, age 12 and Alexander, age 17. “It’s a challenge with four kids. You want to get it right,” she says. “Nicole is just lovely. She’s our fashion expert. She’s very kind, considerate, always very happy and a great athlete.”

As the winner of the essay contest, Nicole and her family will attend CVD on Mother’s Day at no cost. They will receive unlimited rides wristbands and vouchers for food at any CVD food court vendor.
Moms who come to CVD with their family on Mother’s Day get in at half price.

Conejo Valley Days takes place May 7 through May 10 at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks. Conejo Valley Days hours are Thursday, May 7, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 5:00 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, May 9, noon to midnight and Sunday, May 10, noon to 8:00 p.m.

Active military personnel can get in free all four days by showing their active military identification. The 59th Annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD), May 7 through May 10 at Conejo Creek Park South (23 Freeway/Janss Rd. exit) in Thousand Oaks, will feature everything from live entertainment at the Golden Horseshoe stage to kids’ crafts to outhouse races. The four-day event also includes over 25 carnival rides, exhibits from local museums, dog shows and a gem show. Pets Central Education and Welfare Foundation is the 2015 title sponsor.

RCS Shows Carnival

For the second year, RCS Shows is CVD’s carnival and midway operator. Its rides can be found at the Los Angeles County Fair and Coachella Music Festival as well as other large festivals around the western U.S. CVD rides include the Grand Wheel, Mach 1 and Insanity. New this year is Monkey Maize. “We know CVD is in a rebuilding stage and we love being part of it. We pride ourselves on long-term relationships,” says Chris Lopez, RCS vice-president. “Last year, we were struck by the friendliness of the Conejo Valley community. It makes us happy to return.”

Chevy Metal/Live Entertainment

Chevy Metal, featuring Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins, will headline this year’s Conejo Valley Days four days of live entertainment. Chevy Metal will perform Saturday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m. The concert is free with CVD admission. A limited number of $20 VIP tickets are available at Rock & Roll Pizza in Moorpark while supplies last. The VIP tickets include CVD admission.

Chevy Metal is a 1970s dirt rock cover band, playing music from 70s groups such as Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Queen and the Rolling Stones in addition to its own original material. Based in Southern California, the group has performed all over the world and has a large loyal following.

The Three Rivers Band will perform Thursday, May 7 (family night, no alcohol served). Friday night, May 8 is DJ dance night with DJ Bernard Puga at 5:00 p.m. and DJ Mike Christie (with light show and prizes) from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

In addition to Chevy Metal, on Saturday, May 9, taking the stage will be an encore performance by the Three Rivers Band (noon), Action Down (2:00 p.m.), The Janks (6:30 p.m.) and Sonny Mone (8:30 p.m.). On Sunday, May 10, The Koles (1:00 p.m.), salsa band Zon Candela (2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.) Gray Wolf Blues Band, a Native American blues band, (5:30 p.m.) and the Thousand Oaks All-Stars (5:30 p.m.) will perform. Thousand Oaks’ Aspire Dance Studio will be performing at noon.

Always a crowd pleasurer, CVD Outhouse Races will take place on Sunday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. Past entries have been “Gotta Go,” “Ye Olde John” and “Poop Coupe.”

For the fourth year, Reeds Furniture is hosting a Home Emporium during CVD. It will feature CVD signage and Western and Victorian furniture for sale–all in keeping with CVD’s country roots. The Emporium will also have a photo booth area complete with western style clothing.

Museums, Family Fun

A number of local museums and nonprofit associations will have booths at CVD. “The Conejo Valley is rich in history,” says Mary-Catherine McBride, CVD executive director. “Festival goers will get a taste of that history at CVD.” The Chumash Indian Museum, Joel McCrea Ranch, Stagecoach Inn Museum and California Art Museum Thousand Oaks will be at CVD. “The Chumash Museum will bring artifacts found in the area as well as do storytelling circles for kids interested in learning about local Native American life,” says McBride.

The Conejo Gem & Mineral Club will display part of its collection and have vendors at CVD on all four days. On Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, the Thousand Oaks Library booth will have crafts for kids and information about its upcoming summer reading program.

CVD Grand Marshal

Long-time Conejo Valley resident and Conejo Recreation & Park District Board of Director George Lange is the 59th Annual Conejo Valley Days Grand Marshal. Lange and his family have been active in Conejo Valley Days since his family moved to Thousand Oaks in 1965. His young children took part in the CVD children’s parade back then, his wife, Judy, helped judge entries in the annual CVD parade and, as a Kiwanis member, Lange was involved in the parade and CVD site activities.

“It is a special honor to be selected as CVD grand marshal. Conejo Valley Days brings out the best of our community,” says Lange. “CVD is a place where we can all come together to share good times with family and friends. I’m excited to be involved.”

Nonprofits and Sponsors

More than two dozen nonprofit groups take part in CVD. For many, it is their biggest fundraiser of the year. “Nonprofit sell tickets, keep CVD clean, help get the word out about the festival and sell food at the fair,” says McBride. “By supporting CVD, you’re supporting your community.”

CVD sponsors include KHAY, Acorn Papers, Rock & Roll Pizza, Reeds Furniture, Lazer Broadcasting, The Kim Pagano Show, Best Western Plus Thousand Oaks Inn, Macaroni Kid, GoBeDo Productions, Classic Party Rentals, California Museum of Art, Thousand Oaks and Conejo Valley Times.

Read & Ride

Students throughout the area are taking part in an RCS-sponsored “Read & Ride” program where kids read three books, write about them, have a parent and teacher/librarian sign-off on the Read & Ride reading form and in return, the students receive free passes to go on three CVD rides. A dozen schools and the Thousand Oaks Library are participating. “We are very high on education and reading,” says Lopez. “Our biggest competition is video games. Encouraging kids to read by rewarding them with free rides not only has them reading more, but they turn off their electronic devices and experience the carnival and the outdoors.”

RCS brings about 150 employees to CVD. They stay almost two weeks. “With the amount of people we have, we make an impact on the local economies wherever we go,” says Lopez. “We shop at stores, eat at restaurants, we rent equipment and purchase fuel. It’s all local.”

“RCS carnivals are known for their safety, cleanliness and professionalism,” says McBride. “That means a lot when you’re brining your family to the festival or dropping off your teens. You want to know that everyone will be safe.”

Conejo Valley Days hours are Thursday, May 7, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 5:00 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, May 9, noon to midnight and Sunday, May 10, noon to 8:00 p.m. KHAY-FM is broadcasting live on Saturday from noon to 2:00 p.m. and KLJR-FM is broadcasting live from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.

All moms that come with their families can attend CVD at half price on Mother’s Day, May 10. Active military personnel can get in free all four days by showing their active military identification. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth who participated in the CVD Read & Ride program can pick up their free ride passes at the RCS Information Booth inside CVD. Students need to bring their completed Read & Ride form signed by a parent and teacher/librarian.

Volunteers are needed for Conejo Valley Days’ Special Kids Day, Friday, May 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Kids with special needs will be able to enjoy the fun and excitement of the 59th annual Conejo Valley Days (CVD) before the festival opens later that day to the public. Volunteers are needed to give one-on-one attention to each child as well greet kids as they enter CVD and to serve food.

Sponsored by Zonta Club of the Conejo Valley for over 35 years, Special Kids Day brings more than 200 kids to the CVD site (23 Freeway at Janss Rd. exit). Kids go on rides, play games and enjoy a hamburger lunch provided by the Thousand Oaks Elks Lodge. Students are preapproved to attend by the Conejo Valley Unified School District. The event is not open to the public.

Kids range in age from preschool through fifth grade. Zonta Club arranges for buses to transport the children to and from schools to CVD.

“Our volunteers are what make Special Kids Day happen,” says Mary Lou Miller, Zonta’s Special Kids Day coordinator. “Volunteers take time off of work and school and are always eager to ensure that the kids have a wonderful time.”

Volunteers must be 16 years or older. Individuals, groups and businesses can also help by making a donation to help offset costs.

To sign up to volunteer or to donate, go to www.zontacv.org or contact Miller at 805-492-5779 or email skd@zontacv.org or For more information about Conejo Valley Days, go to www.conejovalleydays.us.
